IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: Learning a foreign language offers an insight into how people from other cultures think and see the world.
The teaching of a foreign language should be compulsory at all primary schools.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

The world is transforming into a global village. The influence of other cultures, particularly foreign languages, may negatively affect local culture and tradition. However, a nation should tolerate this influence to gain benefit from globalization such as knowledge and technology transfers from developed nations. Therefore, in order to take these advantages, a foreign language should be added to all primary schools’ curriculum.

The introduction of a foreign language at primary schools might result in a loss ofe national identity and local language because indigenous students would use foreign language as medium to communicate within communities. According to the research of the Living Tongues Institute in the United States shows that one language dies every two weeks because of globalization, and this cause the loss of custom and own identity. Thus, national identification and language might vanish from the introduction of foreign languages in schooling system.

The effect of globalization is inevitable in the modern world. However, a country can gain benefits from this phenomenon for its national development by introducing foreign languages in the schools. For instance, most developed nations offer scholarships to developing countries to build up human resources and technology. Through this mechanism, students from developing countries are required to meet oversea universities’ requirements before enrollment, especially foreign language. Therefore, foreign languages should be introduced to students to benefit from oversea education.

Furthermore, foreign languages also enable to improve financial status and living standard. For instance, some tourist destination countries, such as Cambodia, Egypt and others, English is essential for locals to guide and serve foreign tourists in exchange for income. As a result, the living conditions of the locals is improving at a faster pace. So, foreign language is a key to improve living standard.

In conclusion, in the modern world the government should include foreign languages in all primary schools’ curriculum because it can alleviate poverty and improve national development.
