Writing Task II
Topic: many people would argue that in the modern world, the image is becoming more powerful than the written word. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
As the world becomes a global village, perception also changes. Although many people argue that the image is getting more powerful than the written word, others believe that the written word is still considered essential due to the usefulness of legal documents and academic studies. Therefore, the written word is significantly functional in both formal and informal social interaction.
It may be true that the image can be used in some contexts to convey as special message publicly. An example regarding this can be found in road signs which illustrate the traffic directions or road conditions. Besides, some images are displayed in hospitals such as No Smoking and Hygiene posters. Also images relating to services and child trafficking posters can be found in restaurants. Thus images used in some public places can be considered as vital messages for people.
However, the written word has been regarded as the main form of communication to date. It is applied to a variety of contexts compared to images which are used only in some restricted settings. Images are also viewed as the great influence on culture or literature. For example, images cannot supplant Khmer literature or classics such as Tum Teav. Regarding the formality of the message, for example, the written word is essential in formal and informal settings. It is used as an effective message in terms of social interaction or everyday communication.
In addition, it is regarded as a functional way particularly in workshops or in international conferences. More importantly, it is even more functional and fundamental for the written word to be utilized in an academic setting. For example, it can be applied to written reports, assignments, and dissertations. Clearly, the written words function effectively and notably in a formal setting.
In conclusion, it is fundamental to use the written word in formal ways especially in formal meetings as well as an academic learning environment.
