IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: Too much attention is paid to and too much money is spent on keeping pets, while people throughout the world are starving.
Discuss the arguments for and against keeping pets. To what extent do you agree?

Individuals have different methods to console themselves. Pets are considered as friendly animals to release stress or depression. However, owning a pet requires considerable expenditure for care, food and medication. Therefore, these funds should be spent for alleviation of famine or starving people rather than pets.

Pets are good friends for people who suffer loneliness, isolation and stress. In many European countries where people live independently and lack close family relations, individuals usually keep a pet as a close friend, particularly a dog, for shopping and travel. As a result, this can decrease suicide among isolated people. Thus, pets may decrease social problems through their role as friends.

However, people need to spend too much money to keep pets, and this money should be spent to reduce poverty and starvation. For example, the expenditure on food and medication for pets in Western countries worth billions of dollars, while people in Sudan, Somalia and other less developed nations live in hunger. So, money for taking care of pets should be spent on starving people.

Furthermore, keeping pet is not time effective. People have to spend at least three hours a day for care, while housework or social work needs a considerable labour to improve society. For example, some Americans prefer to participate to preserve environment rather than pets. Therefore, spending time for social work is more meaningful than keeping pets.

In conclusion, people should spend money and time to alleviate poverty, hunger and social activities rather than useless pets.

People and animals are living creatures. Too much emphasis is put on animals and may be consider negatively. In contrast, much of the world population is starving. Thus, people should be considered as a priority for support.

Based on research, animals have been used to cure people psychologically. Single and retired people could be accompanied by animals. Research also supports that pets could prevent heart problems for people when they get older. Pets such as dogs are considered as a man’s best friend. Dogs are also used as friends for disabled people. This case is practicable in developed countries such as Canada and Japan. Therefore, animals might give more advantages to societies.

On the other hand, starvation is a crucial and present obstacle for many countries. Sub-Sahara is the poorest area in the world. Many children work to support their own family and siblings but their earnings are still insufficient to support their basic needs. Money should be spent on this area rather than spending on keeping pets. People should care their own kind first before they look after other creatures. Hence, money should be prioritized to support people.

In addition, people overuse their time and money for pets caring. Owners regularly spend money for pets checkup and grooming. People should consider social activities and productivities which bring social development. So too much time spent with pets is unnecessary.

In summary, too much attention and money are spent on keeping pets and should be minimized. Those funds should be spent to support people’s fundamental needs.

Topic: According to a recent study, the more time people use the Internet, the less time they spend with real human beings. Should we worry about the effect this is having on social interaction or should we see the Internet as a way of opening up new communication possibilities worldwide?
What are your views?

By the advent of internet, the universe has formed a global village. Internet has become a very practical tool in communication. However, some people have argued that the Internet keeps individuals away from social interaction. Therefore, social isolation is the main concern for internet users because this can lead to mental problems.

It may be true that the internet has played an important role in communication. The internet may give individuals an opportunity to have interaction without having to be around people, especially those who are in the other part of the world. Today for better communication, internet users can utilize the facilities of e-mail, chartroom and calling. There are plenty application services in offering such as Skype, Yahoo messenger and Facebook. Thus, with help of such services, it has become very easy to establish a kind of global friendship where personal thoughts are shared, and other cultures of different ethnicity can be explored.

In contrast, the internet is the main cause of less social interaction. Users can be addicted to using it and pay no attention to surrounding living things. This creates fragile relationship among peers, and family members which consequently causes stress, isolation and in rare cases even suicide. For instance, when young people spend more time on line than in real world interactions, intellectual and social development is replaced by the limited ability to interact and deal with problems in person. Therefore, fragile relationship can happen as the result of internet addiction.

In the final analysis, even though internet may provide individuals with a faster form of communication, it merely damages interaction among users.

Topic: many people would argue that in the modern world, the image is becoming more powerful than the written word. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

As the world becomes a global village, perception also changes. Although many people argue that the image is getting more powerful than the written word, others believe that the written word is still considered essential due to the usefulness of legal documents and academic studies. It is shown that, the written word is significantly functional in both formal and informal social interaction.

It may be true that the image can be used in some contexts to convey as special message publicly. An example regarding this can be found in road signs which illustrate the traffic directions or road conditions. Besides, some images are displayed in hospitals such as No Smoking and Hygiene posters. Also images relating to services and child trafficking posters can be found in restaurants. Thus images used in some public places can be considered as vital messages for people.

However, the written word has been regarded as the main form of communication to date. It is applied to a variety of contexts compared to images which are used only in some restricted settings. Images are also viewed as the great influence on culture or literature. For example, images cannot supplant Khmer literature or classics such as Tum Teav. Regarding the formality of the message, for example, the written word is essential in formal and informal settings. It is used as an effective message in terms of social interaction or everyday communication.

In addition, it is regarded as a functional way particularly in workshops or in international conferences. More importantly, it is even more functional and fundamental for the written word to be utilized in an academic setting. For example, it can be applied to written reports, assignments, and dissertations. Clearly, the written words function effectively and notably in a formal setting. Good

Topic: Many people would argue that in the modern world, the image is becoming more powerful than the written word. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Since the innovation of technology, people’s perception on interaction has changed. People regard communication by written word as boring and hard to comprehend. Instead, the image has become a useful way to disseminate information in daily life. Thus, it is clear that images are easily recognized and interesting for all ages in modern society.

In the past, the meaning of the written word was nominal for full content and understanding among communicators which could not be misunderstood or exaggerated. For example, they would write “No Smoking” in non-smoking areas. This could be comprehended well among literate people, but not for all. Also, the
Written word may be considered to be a formal way to distribute the message locally and nationally. Thus, people can have a clear understanding of information through the written word.

In contrast, people tend to get more information through images because it provides worldwide recognition and comprehension. Icons such as No Phones, No Entry, and Danger are global illustrations. These can be understood globally including illiterate people. Therefore, the image is becoming internationally powerful today.

In addition, the image is very interesting to capture people’s attention because it not sophisticated compared to the written word. There is a proverb saying that “Pictures mean a thousand words”. That’s why some well-known companies use symbols for their brand name products. Nike and Apple are examples of logo use which has been internationally recognized for a long time. Thus, the image is a very practical way to gain people’s attention and remember.

In brief, the ease in comprehension, and its attraction have made images become extremely powerful and popular in modern society.

Topic: Many people would argue that in the modern world, the image is becoming more powerful than the written word. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

According to a Chinese proverb “a picture can describe thousands of words”. Some conservatives believe that using images to provide information or prohibition is an impolite method. However, those images have been used worldwide as a signal to inform people and even illiterates find it easy to understand. Thus, images are a powerful way to provide information, compared to written word. Good.

Every nation has their own language and script and it should be used officially as medium to convey information instead of using icons. For example, the written words have been used in many circumstances in many developing countries in order to preserve languages such as poetry and novels, and it is the best way to provide correct spelling to students. Furthermore, use of the images is hard for some uneducated people to understand and easily misinterpret. Thus, the icon is mysterious, misinterpreted and hard to comprehend.

However, the image is becoming an international mechanism to raise awareness to people concisely. Most places such as roads, airports, schools and hospitals to give messages and warn people, and it is a useful device because illiterates could understand. For instance, some symbols in hospitals are displayed to alert people from smoking and annoying. And those images are more attractive than the written words that sometimes people could not read or understand. Therefore, the image is a powerful path to disseminate information because of its attraction and visibility.

To sum up, due to the attraction and visibility the image has became an international standard and potent method to inform or prohibit people. While using the written word is enormous barrier across cultures.

Topic: Many people would argue that in the modern world, the image is becoming more powerful than the written word. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

One image is worth a thousand words. The majority of people consider the written word is changed in giving information while the image is gaining more influence on people. It can be clearly seen that dissemination of information through images is a ubiquitous means of communication worldwide.

People use the written word to illustrate or convey instructions or schedules. For instance, air conditioners contain cleaning instructions on how to operate it efficiently and effectively. Additionally, student examination timetables are another example of the written word. Therefore, the written word can be valuable in presenting information.

On the contrary, images have more advantages than the written word for several reasons. Illiterate or non-native people can understand the information very well, regardless of circumstances. A good illustration of this is ‘Ladies’ or ‘Men’ toilet signs. Related to transportation, the traffic signs are understood internationally. Similarly, people are aware of the airport signs such as departure icons.

Furthermore, images indicate a nations’ culture and history. The Louvre museum in Paris provides French culture by its images. Carvings on temples represent tales or religions. So images do play an integrated role in modern society globally.
In addition, the image is recommended to encourage children to learn to think and is incorporated into programmes to develop cognition skills in children. In the United States, children learn to draw images. They will begin to notice the environment around them, such as shapes or colours. Using images in education is an ideal option.

In summary, images are a popular means of communication activities than the written word including travelling, information and education.
