EXAMPLE OF AN EXPOSITION - DISCURSIVE ESSAY

EXAMPLE OF AN EXPOSITION - DISCURSIVE ESSAY

PURPOSE: to persuade

STRUCTURE: 1. Introduction – a short paragraph stating both points of view and a thesis statement. (The thesis indicates your point of view)

2. Points For – one paragraph giving reasons why the future is
bright. These reasons should be supported by evidence and examples. (This will develop the antithesis)

3. Points Against – one paragraph giving reasons why the future is not bright. These reasons should be supported by evidence and examples. (This will develop the thesis)

4. Conclusion – a brief paragraph stating your point of view (thesis) based on the reasons and evidence you have given.

A point of view and thesis statement are required for both argumentative and discursive essays. We may use the analogy of a court case. Consider the thesis statement as the defence and the antithesis as the prosecution. There is no point in holding a trial without a verdict. In terms of spoken text, consider your discursive essay as a debate in which both sides are presented. Without a final adjudication, the debate has little purpose. Remember the purpose of an exposition (argumentative or discursive) is to persuade, If the writer has no clear viewpoint, then it is impossible to persuade the reader.

SAMPLE ESSAY DISCURSIVE The Future is Bright - Discuss

The future is a mystery to everyone. Some people would argue that the future is bright because modern technology will soon be able to solve most problems in our society. Other people think that modern technology will bring about the destruction of the world. If we consider the recent negative environmental and social trends in the world today it is impossible to be optimistic about the future.

It can be argued that modern technology has solved many of the world’s problems, and may continue to do so in the future. We have made rapid progress, especially in the fields of medicine, communication and transport.[ Scientists are now able to cure or prevent many of the diseases that previously affected millions of people. For example, polio can be eliminated simply by vaccination.[ As well as this there has been an explosion in the area of information technology and communication. This also makes it easier to conduct business in any part of the world.[ Along with the advances made in communication, transport has also been improved all over the world. Even in developing countries, many people now own private transport or are able to travel quickly and easily using public transport. Therefore, it is sometimes claimed that technology will provide mankind with the universal panacea of the future.

However, modern technology also brings many disadvantages.[ Pollution is one result of increased technology and industrialization. The effects of this can be seen in the destruction of the ozone layer as well as global warming. [Improvements in technology have also increased the effectiveness of weapons, especially weapons of mass destruction. [As a direct result of modern technology, certainly in the future new diseases will appear. [Although transport has improved, it brings with it the danger of air pollution and traffic congestion. [Overpopulation and starvation will increase in the future because natural resources are limited and undoubtedly the amount of fertile land is decreasing steadily.

In conclusion, it is clear that for most people in the world the future is not bright because mankind is destroying the environment through unsustainable development. Modern technology can solve some problems but without careful planning the future looks bleak.

EXPOSITION - ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

EXPOSITION - ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

PURPOSE: to persuade

STRUCTURE: 1. Introduction – a short paragraph stating ONE point of view supported by the thesis statement

2. Points For – one paragraph giving reasons why the future is
bright. These reasons should be supported by evidence and examples.

OR

3. Points Against – one paragraph giving reasons why the future is not
bright. These reasons should be supported by evidence and examples

4. Conclusion – a brief paragraph stating your point of view based on
the reasons and evidence you have given.

In argumentative form only ‘points against’ are given. Equally valid, depending on the writer’s point of view, would be ‘points for’ - but NOT BOTH.

Often examination questions are confusing to students by the nature of their wording. For example, the essay may question could be: -

‘We Should Preserve The Environment. Discuss.’

The word ‘discuss’ is misleading as there are very few ‘points against’ this statement and the obvious response would be an argumentative rather than discursive essay structure. This is not common as most essay questions avoid ‘motherhood issues’.

The following essay takes an argumentative structure.

1. Introduction

2. Points against the statement

3. Conclusion

SAMPLE ESSAY – ARGUMENTATIVE ‘The Future is Bright – Discuss’

Nobody can predict the future. Despite this, it is becoming increasingly apparent that modern technology will ultimately bring about the destruction of our planet. If we consider the negative environmental and social trends in the world today, to be optimistic about the future is to live in a fool’s paradise.

Modern technology comes at a price. [Pollution is one result of increased technology and industrialization. The effects of this can be seen in the destruction of the ozone layer as well as global warming. [Improvements in technology have also increased the effectiveness of weapons, especially weapons of mass destruction.[ As a direct result of modern technology, in the future it is possible that new diseases will appear. [Although transport has improved, it brings with it the danger of air pollution and traffic congestion. [Overpopulation and starvation will increase in the future because natural resources are limited and the amount of fertile land is decreasing steadily. In other words, technology creates more problems than solutions.

In conclusion, it is clear that for most people in the world the future is not bright because mankind is destroying the environment through unsustainable development. We only need to look at present trends in order to predict that the future looks bleak.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: A government’s role is only to provide defense capability and urban infrastructure (roads, water supplies, etc.). All other services (education, health, social security) should be provided by private group or individuals in the community.

Governments play critical roles to rehabilitate nations and strengthen social stability. Some people claim that defense capability and urban infrastructure are the burden of government while others believe that education, health, and social security service may be the responsibility of privatization in the communities. Due to the pivotal roles and functions of governments related to social rehabilitation, government should functionally accept responsibility services.

It may be true that private enterprises should be entitled to provide education, health, and social security. In developed nations, for instance, education and health service are offered by private sector. Due to the free market, public and private sector compete against each other aimed at improving service for citizens. In Australia, New Zealand, for example, universities, schools or hospitals run by privates in regarding better service delivery. Therefore, private companies may play key roles in contributing to social and economic development.

However, governments have significant functions to develop the countries as well as to provide citizens with social welfare, stability and harmonization. Besides the provision of defense capability and urban infrastructure, governments have to be responsible for other services-education, health and social security. These services are prime elements to produce human resources and consolidate social welfare. The government mandates is to provide national rehabilitation vital services, including human capacity, and social stability. Owing to the central roles of governments, for example, many ministries which are responsible for various fields are formed to serve the nations. Thus, governments have major functions to provide not only not some fundamental services but also other principal services-education, health, and social security.

In conclusion, though governments have imperative roles in offering essential services, private enterprise may share the responsibilities. However, the primary roles remain with the government.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: Learning a foreign language offers an insight into how people from other cultures think and see the world.
The teaching of a foreign language should be compulsory at all primary schools.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

The world is transforming into a global village. The influence of other cultures, particularly foreign languages, may negatively affect local culture and tradition. However, a nation should tolerate this influence to gain benefit from globalization such as knowledge and technology transfers from developed nations. Therefore, in order to take these advantages, a foreign language should be added to all primary schools’ curriculum.

The introduction of a foreign language at primary schools might result in a loss ofe national identity and local language because indigenous students would use foreign language as medium to communicate within communities. According to the research of the Living Tongues Institute in the United States shows that one language dies every two weeks because of globalization, and this cause the loss of custom and own identity. Thus, national identification and language might vanish from the introduction of foreign languages in schooling system.

The effect of globalization is inevitable in the modern world. However, a country can gain benefits from this phenomenon for its national development by introducing foreign languages in the schools. For instance, most developed nations offer scholarships to developing countries to build up human resources and technology. Through this mechanism, students from developing countries are required to meet oversea universities’ requirements before enrollment, especially foreign language. Therefore, foreign languages should be introduced to students to benefit from oversea education.

Furthermore, foreign languages also enable to improve financial status and living standard. For instance, some tourist destination countries, such as Cambodia, Egypt and others, English is essential for locals to guide and serve foreign tourists in exchange for income. As a result, the living conditions of the locals is improving at a faster pace. So, foreign language is a key to improve living standard.

In conclusion, in the modern world the government should include foreign languages in all primary schools’ curriculum because it can alleviate poverty and improve national development.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: Too much attention is paid to and too much money is spent on keeping pets, while people throughout the world are starving.
Discuss the arguments for and against keeping pets.
To what extent do you agree?

Animals are such agreeable friends. Keeping pets reflects companionship and a caring environment. However, too much attention on pets is time ineffective and extravagant since starving people are waiting for this assistance and attention. Thus, special attention and money should be distributed to starving people not pets.

Companionship may be a practical reason for keeping pets. From a social standpoint, pets may play a large role in many lonely people’s lives. Nowadays more than ever lonely people are fond of keeping pets, because it helps to relieve boredom, loneliness and depression to some extent. A dog for example is considered man's best friend and a reliable housekeeper. Furthermore, keeping pets might build up habit of care for other living things. This may help creating the feeling of taking responsibilities for others. Therefore, pets are good companions to release stress.
In contrast, too much attention on pets is extravagant while it is considered very useful for hungers. For instance, most families in developed countries are spending money extravagantly on pet food and medical treatment. The money should be spent effectively to charity for millions of hungers in the world. In addition, keeping pets is time ineffective. Instead of spending much time on pets, individuals should involve in other social activities to help improving the country social issues. IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: The idea of having a single career is becoming an old fashioned one. The new fashion will be to have several careers or ways of earning money and further education will be something that continues throughout life.

Employment is one major source to support life. Having a single career is an archaic notion. However, having several careers and further education will be better for life. It may be shown that various occupations and further education provide plenty of opportunities to cope with a fast moving environment.

A single job for an entire lifetime may be practicable with self-employment. For instance, an entrepreneur initiates and runs his business for the rest of his life. And his work may be passed to his sons or daughters. Therefore this traditional work will be continued from generation to generation. It may be acceptable to have a single job for life as it is easy to do due to experience and expertise.

On the contrary, people should have several careers rather than one because the world has changed. Advanced technologies transform the world. Some jobs have been mechanized. Being chained to a single job is a form of stagnation. Proactivity by learning other skills results in a greater capability for a variety of jobs. Hence, a variety of employment experience allows flexibility.

Employment mobility is a necessity.Multi-skilling is a good illustration. A director or a chief executive officer in a corporation can hold another position as a member of a remuneration committee. Additionally, further education is crucial for career development. Higher degrees contribute to better future career prospects and social recognition. Therefore, up-grading capacity and having occupational scope result in more opportunities.

In conclusion, having a diversity of employment provides economic opportunities. Further education will facilitate the ability to cope with dynamic change from globalization.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: The exploration and development of safe alternatives to fossil fuels should be the most important global priority today. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

As the environmental deterioration concern the globe through the vehicle and industry emissions which results from gas and oil use, another safe alternative source should be explored and developed in order to supplant the fossil fuels. Although fossil fuels have been utilized and benefit societal and technological development, it has impact on ecosystem and ozone layer. Therefore, safe alternatives- solar power and hydro power should be a better choice for friendly environment.

The world had transformed to industrial and technological era through the use of oil, gas and coal. They are the prime source which is used to operate industries as well as a fundamental source for national development.
For example, Arabic countries are rich with fuel, which gives them more possibilities to develop their countries, such as build skyscrapers and modern buildings. As the result Dubai is one of the development and modern countries. Thus, fuels fossil may be the source contributing to national and economic development.

It can be argued that using fossil fuels as a source of energy has caused many negative consequences for the environment. The burning of these fuels has increased greenhouse gases that have contributed to climate change and ozone layer depletion. Recently, for example, the oil slick seriously threatens marine life and causes major ecological damage in The United States and Gulf of Mexico after an explosion one of the wells off the US coast. Hence safe alternatives to fossil fuels are a must to save our future.
The exploration of solar power as a source of energy has been applied in Australia and New Zealand. This is an eco-friendly method and can provide lots of energy. Another method to consider is hydropower power. According to U.S Energy Information Administration, hydropower is the renewable energy source that produces the most electricity in the United States. It accounted for 6% of total U.S. electricity generation and 67% of generation from renewable in 2008. Therefore, solar and hydropower are renewable sources which are friendly environment and cost effective.
In conclusion, although the supplies of fossil fuels are still useful in many countries, using safe alternatives to fossil fuels can ensure the sustainability of environment and save the next generations.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: The use of CCTV ( close circuit television cameras in streets, stations, shops and other public places has increased rapid rapidly in recent years. Although we are told that these cameras help in the fight against crime, some people are opposed to their use. They believe that everyone has a right to privacy. What are your views?

Public security is pivotal for all nations. Security cameras are an invasion of privacy while others argue that camera installation at public places is appreciated by citizens. Individual safety is more critical for citizens because peace is a worldwide desire.

Cameras oppose privacy. Passengers travelling by plane are covered by clothes, however this issue may be complained by human rights activists. Activists consider security cameras as a privacy violation. Individual surveillance might provide freedom rather under detection by cameras. Therefore, cameras may not be prohibited from public places.

In addition, protecting people may be the responsibility of the authorities. In the past, each society did not have cameras but cities still lived in well organized societies. Advanced technology could not guarantee better choices for national stability so societies can be safe without cameras.

On the contrary, security cameras provide well-disciplined societies. They reduce traffic accidents from speeding drivers. They play pivotal roles against terrorism. Many cameras are stored at airports. Those cameras can be used to monitor suspicious activities including criminal activities or vandalism. Hence, cameras have encouraging results.

Furthermore, surveillance cameras provide several beneficiaries. They are effective in the prevention of shoplifting as well as illegal activities such as inventory shrinkage from employees. Digital security cameras are used to control employees’ punctuality in the work place. Those cameras contain audio which is beneficial in preventing harassment. Therefore, securities cameras offer various advantages.

In summary, installing of cameras in public places should be promoted. Citizens’ security should be a priority.
