IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: Women have been disadvantages in the workplace for decades, so they should now receive special assistance in the form of incentives, education and training. Discuss.

Gender equity is one of the most important issues in society. The dominance of men in the working environment is the result of gender bias. This has created a lot of difficulties for women in workplace. Thus extra-assistance including incentives, education and training should be provided to women to avoid gender bias, to bring women better status in the society and to reduce child mortality.

Since both genders have equal right in work participation, employers should not offer any extra assistance to the women because this may affect work quality and lead to masculine revolution. For instance, most employees in the United States are treated equally and fairly, regardless gender. Any incentive offer may cause jealousy among male employees and negative consequences to employers. Therefore, women should not be provided any extra-assistance.

However, women are crucial for national development. The provision of other benefits, including incentive, education and training, can improve social development and civilization. For instance, women along the Mekong river basin act as internal managers to manage fund and family living, and be able to resist every work atmosphere. So if employers are able provide further education and other forms of incentives to the women, they will become the effective person to improve the business and work quality. Thus, extra-help from employers can improve work quality and national development.

In addition, extra-assistance not only improve work quality but also better lifestyle. It is believe that ladies with higher education lead better lives than those who are illiterate. For example, the research on lady education in Africa shows that high educated mother can reduce mortality rate since the living hygiene has been improved. Thus, women should be assisted in further education and training to improve living standard and reduce mortality rate.

In summary, special assistance including incentives, education, and training should be provided to lady at workplace to ensure better work quality, lifestyle and national development.

IELTS Writing Task 2

Topic: The exploration and development of safe alternatives to fossil fuels should be the most important global priority today. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Twenty-first century is regarded as the technological revolution. Energy plays a main role in industrial development and most power sources are from minerals, particularly fossil fuels. However, the emission from fossil fuels is effecting the environment. This causes climate change or even a possible apocalypse. Therefore, the exploration and development of safe alternative energy, including biofuel, wind power, solar energy and hydropower, should be prioritized to preserve environment.

In the modern lifestyle, eighty percent of energy is from fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, which are the source to improve the quality of living and support for development. For instance, coals have been used to produce power for Australian manufactures for commodity production. Therefore, the use of fossil fuels may be the source of national development.

However, the world should not heavily rely on fossil fuel power because this can increase carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere which leads to global warming. Friendly environmental energy should be developed and explored because it can preserve environment. Furthermore, renewable energy has drawn attention from the developed world. For example, the Japanese government has pledged billions of dollars for development of friendly energy in developing nations. Thus, friendly energy can reduce pollution from the atmosphere.

In addition, renewable energy should be supported by the developed nations because the main source of pollution and global warming come from the fossil fuel emission of industrial countries. For example, the United States and China are the main polluters in the world. Thus, renewable energy projects should be funded by the developed world.

In conclusion, friendly energy should be prioritized because it can reduce global warming and improve environment.

EFL or ESL?

What is the difference between English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language?
Firstly, EFL is essentially a UK term whereas ESL is an American term. Beyond that, a distinction is made between teaching English to non-native speakers in a non-English speaking country (EFL) and teaching English to non-native speakers in an English-speaking country (ESL). This distinction does not seem to be well observed, and many British teachers use EFL as a blanket term whereas many American teachers use ESL as a blanket term. The same of course applies to TEFL and TESL.
(ESL ignores the fact that learners may well be on their third, fourth, fifth or sixth language. EFL, some people contend on purely pedagogical grounds, should stand for English as a First Language!).

Using Adjective Clauses

Adjective clauses (relative clauses) are like "sentences
inside sentences." The "job" of adjective clauses is to
modify (describe, identify, make specific) the noun
phrases that they follow. In their full forms, adjective
clauses have several parts: a relative pronoun (or, in
some cases, another kind of connecting word), a subject,
and a predicate (a verb and, often, other types of
words which follow it).
• In adjective clauses, the relative pronoun is a kind of
connecting word: it joins the information in the clause
to the noun phrase that it follows. Without the adjective
clause, the meaning of the modified noun phrase (and
of the sentence) is unclear and incomplete.
• Examples (full forms):
• I know a person who / that can help you.
I know a person who(m) / that you can help.
I know a person whose advice I can trust.
I know a person to whom I can refer you. /
I know a person who(m) / that I can refer you to.
• I want a car that / which gets good gas mileage.
I can't afford the car that / which I really want.

Listening
• Read the instructions and questions carefully before you listen.
• Try to get an idea of the situation. Who are the speakers? Where are they? Why are they speaking?
• Remember, you will only hear the audio once. You will need to read, write and listen all at the same time.
• Listen for 'signpost words' such as however, although and finally. They help you to anticipate what the speaker will say.

Reading
• Skim through each text to try to get a basic understanding of what it is about. What is the text about? Who was it written for?
• Carefully read the title and any sub-heading.
• What is the main point of each paragraph? Each paragraph contains a single main idea. The questions will focus on these main ideas.
• Remember questions appear in the same order as the answers in the text.

TOEFL TESTS

Who is it for?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. Most people who take the TOEFL test are planning to study at colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.
Versions of the TOEFL® test
You can do the test on paper or on a computer, depending where you live. The test comes in two formats:
1. paper-based test (PBT)
2. next generation computer-based test (iBT)
The iBT is not yet available at every test center. If it is available at your local center then you will have to do it. If not you will do the PBT.
